About

Marmara Beach

Marmara is a small pebble cove east of Loutro on the south Cretan coast, accessible only by boat or a coastal hiking trail. There is no road. The beach sits below sheer white limestone cliffs and the water is exceptionally clear, as is typical of the south coast of Crete which has no rivers flowing into the sea to bring sediment. In calm weather the visibility underwater exceeds 30 metres.

The easiest way to reach Marmara is to drive to Hora Sfakion (73 km from Chania), take the short ferry or water taxi to the car free village of Loutro, and then follow the E4 coastal path east for about 40 minutes along the cliffs. The path is well marked and the walk is scenic, though it involves some exposed sections with modest exposure to heights. Alternatively, water taxis from Loutro or Hora Sfakion can deposit you directly at the beach.

Marmara receives visitors who are specifically seeking a remote experience. There is nothing at the beach apart from the pebbles, the sea, and the cliffs. No facilities, no shade structures, no food. The reward is a degree of seclusion and water clarity that organised beaches cannot offer. The snorkelling and free diving here, particularly around the underwater cave on the eastern side of the cove, is among the best on the south coast.
