About

Falassarna Beach

Falassarna is a long, wide sandy beach on the northwest coast of Crete that consistently ranks among the best beaches in Greece. The bay stretches for almost three kilometres and is divided into several sections, each with a slightly different character from organised with sun loungers to completely free and wild. The sand is golden and fine, the water runs from turquoise in the shallows to deep blue offshore, and there is usually a gentle wave on the open sea side.

The beach faces due west, which means Falassarna stages some of the most spectacular sunsets in all of Crete. In late summer, the sun drops into the sea directly ahead, and the whole bay turns amber and rose for a long golden hour. This is the main reason many visitors make the 59 km drive from Chania, and it is worth it.

A short walk north along the coast leads to the ruins of ancient Falassarna, a Cretan city state that flourished from around the 4th century BC. The ancient harbour, now lifted well above sea level by tectonic movement, is remarkably well preserved. The juxtaposition of a world class beach with genuine archaeology within walking distance makes this one of the most rewarding day trips in western Crete.
