About

Elafonisi Beach

Elafonisi sits at the southwestern corner of Crete, where a tidal sandbar connects the mainland to a small islet bearing the same name. Its fame rests on something genuinely rare: the sand has a distinct pink blush caused by crushed shells of foraminifera, tiny marine organisms, mixed with white limestone. In the right light, around golden hour in particular, the beach glows.

The water at Elafonisi is exceptional in both clarity and warmth. The shallow lagoon between the mainland and the islet heats up quickly, making it feel almost tropical by July. Depth barely reaches knee height for the first hundred metres, which makes this one of the finest family beaches in all of Crete. Children can wade confidently while adults snorkel the slightly deeper outer edges where posidonia seagrass meadows shelter small fish.

The islet itself rewards exploration on foot. Dunes of pale sand shift between coves on the north side, which tends to be quieter and wilder. A small memorial on the islet remembers a shipwreck in 1907 in which over 600 passengers, mostly women and children, perished attempting to reach shore. Elafonisi is a Natura 2000 protected zone, so camping and open fires are forbidden.
