About
Balos Lagoon
Balos Lagoon sits at the northwestern tip of Crete near Cape Gramvousa, and it earns its reputation as the most photographed beach in Greece without difficulty. The lagoon forms where the peninsula meets the open sea, creating a protected shallow pool that rarely exceeds one metre in depth. The sand carries a faint rose hue from crushed foraminiferal shells mixed with white limestone, giving the whole scene an almost impossible beauty in afternoon light.
The most popular way to arrive is by boat from Kissamos Port, a journey of about 40 minutes that includes a stop at the Venetian fortress on Gramvousa Islet. Alternatively, a rough 9 km dirt track from the village of Kaliviani leads to a hilltop car park, from where a steep 20 minute walk descends to the shore. The view from the top before you reach the sand is one of the finest panoramas in all of Crete.
Mid morning in July and August brings large numbers of visitors arriving on the ferries. The best strategy is to arrive by car in the very early morning or after 4 pm, when the boat crowds have left and the light is at its most beautiful. There is a small canteen on the beach but it sells out quickly and prices are high, so bring your own water and food. Shade is scarce, so high protection sunscreen and a hat are genuinely essential.
